The Tuareg are a traditionally nomadic people who have lived throughout the Sahara for centuries but due to droughts and economic conditions many have had to give up this lifestyle and settle in villages and towns surrounding the Sahara. Their tradition of working with silver, (for which they are famous) still thrives and continues to support a great many Tuareg families. Tuareg jewelry is distinguished by its clean lines and simplicity of form, they also consider that objects worn for protection and well being should be beautiful in order to be effective.
Tuareg jewelry is embellished with techniques that include chasing (engraving), repouse, and stamped designs. In general older jewelry is heavier than that being produced today. Tuareg silver comes in various silver contents, older pieces were never made in sterling as it was not available until more recent times, instead old coins were the source of silver. One coin in particular was the Austrian Maria Theresa thaler which had a high silver content of 84%. Because of its value it may have been mixed with other metals in order to get maximum use. This silver is prefered by the Tuareg for its warm look, while sterling silver, made for Western customers is considered cold!

Thank you for looking at my auctions.  I have travelled in Africa and Yemen for more than 15 years buying silver adornments, old and ancient beads, and ethnographic items.  Over the years I have built up a solid rapport with traders and clients.  I travel 2-3 times per year to meet with traders who collect and save the items that you see here. My auctions at pangea40 only deal with original art that have been worn or used by the tribal groups mentioned in my description.
    Good luck bidding!!
