Allied Military Travel Permits for Germany 1947-1951
:
Written permission was required, for security reasons, in allowing the crossing of frontiers to and from Germany. The Headquarters of the Allied Forces, the Allied High Commission, instituted the usage of Fiscal stamps to indicate prepayment on special Entry Permits into Germany and Austria. The British, French and US military were still responsible of Border control in their respective Zone(s).
The design portrays a Flaming Sword on a shield, a replica of the shoulder patch worn on soldiers' uniforms adopted by SHAEF, Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces.
1948, April
This 1948 stamp issue is a smaller format than the 1947 issue. It was printed in Baden-Baden, Germany, in sheets of 100. Additional values were needed for other types of charges such as Group Travel Permits.
A most unusual tax stamp that has no face value. There were various officials/diplomats/military officers that were exempted from the Travel Permit Fee. Though there was no fee, the stamp was required for control purposes and therefore the need for a "Gratis Stamp". This type stayed in use for travel in and out Berlin till the end of the 1960’s.
In the 1990’s bundles of these overprinted travel permit revenues sheets were found in the printers archives. They were bought by an American stamp dealer, who’s offering these sheets in short supply advertised as very rare items. These are the values: Eine Deutsche Mark overprint on $ 1, GratiS, 2 DM overprint on $ 1, 4 DM overprint on $ 1 and 6 DM overprint on $ 1. And a bunch singles of the DM 8 overprint on .
This is the "GRATIS" stamp, printed in Prussian Blue in Baden-Baden, Germany.
Listed as Bush #7; Yvert & Tellier #TR 5; Erler #5.
Lower Right corner block of 4 with sheet margins and imprint:
Gedruckt am 4. 5. 1950
(Printed on 4 May, 1950).
The stamps are VF, MNH (there is some damage to the margins)
Approximate Image Size: 18½ x 22½ mm.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).
Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.
A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum:
Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.
A Note about "Stock Images":
Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words:
"STOCK IMAGE"
at the end of the description.
