Looking for a working tow truck to either complete your collection or offer assistance in style when one of your four-wheeled children throws a tantrum and breaks down? Take a look at this 1931 International-Harvester A2 1.5-ton tow truck. This truck has benefitted from an extensive restoration and carries a Weaver Auto Crane, ultra-rare Weaver Auto Ambulance Dolly and a working emergency beacon.
The International A-2 was introduced in 1931, was a 1.5 ton rated truck boasting great styling seen on all the A-series tucks. The list of standard features was impressive, as these vehicles were now equipped to get the toughest of all jobs completed!
Made during June 1931, this truck is dressed a R. J. and Sons Garage “Mechanical First Aid and Towing” livery in International Dark Green with custom pinstriping over black wings while the crane and dolly are painted in a contrasting light green. The paint and trim on this truck are in overall very good order. From its Boyce Motometer on the radiator to the auto dolly, the bodywork is straight and solid, including the fold-down windshield; the engine bay is extremely tidy; and the rear business area looks great for its age. Up front is a brown, wooden front bumper that would make a great surface with which to push-start a car.
This truck has a 136-inch wheelbase, a 7,500 GVWR and carries a 15-gallon fuel tank under the bench seat, along with a red undercarriage. Other, period-correct accessories include an extra hand crank to start vehicles (especially those lacking a keyed ignition), a lantern and a two-gallon extra fuel tank.
This truck rolls on Firestone gum-dipped, High Speed balloon tires, size 6.00-20 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel that is painted bright red and offers further contrast to the body colors. The wheels are in excellent order while the tires are in very good shape.
Under the vee’d hood is a XAH 6B 186 CID Waukesha L-head four-cylinder engine #284063, mated to a four-speed sliding gear manual transmission.
Inside, the black bench seat is in overall great shape and is mounted over the truck’s fuel tank. There are black floor mats in place of carpeting (this was a work truck, remember) and there’s no roof so there’s no headliner. The four-spoke black steering wheel looks great. The dark green metal instrument panel has a full array of gauges and appears in very good order, as do the metal inner door liners. A floor-mounted shift lever extends from the transmission hump.
This is a rare find and one that should delight any collector – whether they collect trucks, International-Harvester vehicles or the collector who hunts for eclectic, unusual pieces. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today the review this pre-World War II tow truck.
